About This Spot
Stepping into J & J Fish & Chicken feels like discovering a well-kept secret nestled in the heart of Durham. The pace here is unhurried, inviting you to settle into a simple yet vibrant rhythm that centers on good food and genuine comfort. The space carries a straightforward charm—clean, welcoming, and thoughtfully organized—reflecting the care poured into every plate that leaves the kitchen.
This is the kind of local spot that isn’t trying to be anything other than a reliable source of hearty, satisfying meals. The aroma of well-seasoned fried fish and wings wafts through the air, teasing your appetite before you even glimpse the menu. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick, flavorful takeout or settling in for a comforting combo that brings together crispy chicken and flaky catfish, there’s a warmth here that feels inclusive and welcoming.
The sides and fixings are more than just an afterthought—they offer little moments of joy and nostalgia that elevate the experience. From tender collard greens to a generous helping of mac and cheese or a slice of banana pudding, the accompaniments create a balanced, soulful meal that respects the traditions of Southern cooking without fanfare. And if you find yourself lingering or coming back, it’s easy to see why the fresh-squeezed lemonade has become a quietly beloved highlight among regulars—a bright, refreshing counterpoint to the rich, crispy main dishes.
J & J doesn’t profess to be fancy, but what it does offer is an honest embrace of flavor and a sense of place that resonates with both locals and visitors looking for a genuine taste of Durham’s relaxed, no-frills dining scene. Whether you’re drawn by the allure of perfectly battered fried trout or the promise of wings seasoned just so, this is a humble neighborhood anchor that quietly satisfies in all the right ways.

You know what? Hell yeah… this is a great little stop for those days when you just want a solid fish plate without spending an arm and a leg. I’m not mad at it… make sure you get that lemon pepper seasoning on the fish… 10/10. Greens? Bussin’. Mac? Ehh, 5/10. Okra? Solid 7/10. But that frozen lemonade? Boiiiiiii… 10000/10. Overall? Real decent stop. I’d come back.”

I tried J & J's today on a whim because I was in the area. I had their 2 Item combo with fried wings and fried catfish with max n cheese and collard green and slice bread instead of hushpuppies. I also got an order of their banana pudding. EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUS. I had to pull over in Brier Creek because I couldn't wait until I got home. You could absolutely tell the fish and chicken was fried to order and we'll worth the 15 minute wait through their drive through. I will definitely be back to try their other selections. Lord help me to not go here every single time I have a hankering for delicious southern food.

From the outside the place doesn't look like much, however once you walk in it as good as it gets very clean and organized well, then we get to the food wow!! I had the Flounder with popcorn shrimp that was as good if not better than any seafood anywhere, even better than some of the most expensive seafood restaurants along the coast. The prices were if anything a little to low in my opinion I only wish I had tried it way before now, Friendly people great food and a perfect setting this place has it all. If you don't care about seafood they do have other items on the menu all cooked fresh after you order. My family and I will definitely go back time and again one of the few restaurants that is not just good eating. Dollar for Dollar this place will be very hard to beat.

J&J Fish and Chicken is a very good restaurant every time I order my food Weather I’m 13 minutes away or right there at the counter it is always fresh and hot. The lemonade is to die for make sure you get a large lol you’ll thank me later, they also have cakes and banana pudding. My favorite is the cheesecake so come on down and enjoy yourself.

I ordered the flounder, and my brother ordered the wings — both were absolutely amazing! It’s been a long time since I’ve had wings this big and flavorful. The fish was seasoned perfectly and cooked just right. We’ll definitely be coming back for more.

This was nothing like the JJ's in Atlanta, but even those in Atlanta are different depending on what side of town you visit. The food was good. They have their own Parmesan sprinkle seasoning and it's more lemon pepper than cheese. Different experience but I would return.
